King James in the Curriculum: Biblical Literacy in 2011 (Thursday 26th - Sunday 29th May 2011, Sheffield)
This event is part of the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible being organised by the 2011 Trust (http://www.2011trust.org/about-us/ )
A joint venture between Sheffield University Department of Biblical Studies and Sheffield Cathedral; this conference will explore how contemporary students can be made aware of the nature and impact of the King James Version of the Bible on the intellectual history of any subject discussed or written about in English from the 17th century onwards.
Professor Hugh Pyper from Sheffield's Biblical Studies would like to involve disciplines other than Theology and Religious Studies in exploring some of the following: what do students in other disciplines know/need to know about the KJV? Who teaches them? What resources do they have to do the teaching? How can specialists in biblical studies be most helpful?
The aim is to involve people across disciplines who would be interested in creating some common resources that could be made available to help students grasp the significance of the KJV or the English Bible more generally in their field of study, and to draw on the resources of biblical scholars around the country. Resources would be prepared over this next year, and include the conference. Frank Field MP and Carol Ann Duffy have already agreed to be part of the event.
If you would like to contribute to the development of teaching material, or would be interested in being part of the discussions at the Sheffield event, please contact Hugh Pyper at : H.Pyper@sheffield.ac.uk
